Virginia & Truckee Locomotive No. 12 – GENOA (On Loan From the CSRM)

Featured Exhibit|

The Baldwin Locomotive Works built the Genoa in 1873 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The engine pulled express passenger trains at a top speed of about 45 miles per hour between Reno and Virginia City for nearly 30 years. The locomotive also pulled local mixed passenger and freight trains on the line. The locomotive was sold to the Eastern Presidents Conference in 1938, before being donated to the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society (R&LHS).

In 1969, R&LHS donated the locomotive to the State of California, where it was restored to its 1902 appearance in 1979 before being put on display at the California State Railroad Museum (CSRM). The Genoa has been on display at the CSRM since 1981 but is currently on loan to the Nevada State Railroad Museum for display.
