The following programs are a part of the field trip experience for grades K-5:
Kindergarten:
Trains and Forces: Students explore the concept of force, motion, push and pull. They learn about different pushes and pulls and how they are created using toy trains and ramps with various surfaces. Additionally, students will create miniature railroads using magnets to make their engines move.
First Grade:
Engineering the Perfect Train Car: Students will design and engineer their perfect train car using recycled materials. The students will be given certain design and engineering constraints, but the rest will be up to them.
Second Grade:
Engineering Bridges for Trains: Students will design and engineer small bridges using craft sticks, straws, and tape that will need to be sturdy enough to span a gap and hold a toy train. The students will learn about the different types of bridges and which ones are best for trains.
Third Grade:
Forces and Interactions: How Train Wheels Work: Using models of different types of wheels and rails, students will learn how train wheels work and stay on the track. Surprising geometry and engineering skills will be revealed.
Fourth Grade:
The Transcontinental Railroad and Nevada: Using our Transcontinental Railroad floor map, exhibits, and interactive programming, students will learn how and why the Transcontinental Railroad came to be and how it affected Nevada.
Fifth Grade:
Train Rolling Resistance: Students will learn about rolling resistance and why trains are more efficient than trucks when transporting freight through hands-on experimenting using model trains.
